New and Fiery

Alright so I got ahold of the forthcoming Fiery Furnaces album Rehearsing My Choir and I gotta say it is definitely their weirdest yet. I knew I'd be wary of the grandmother factor but this one blew me away. Olga Santos, the Friedbergers' gradnmother, doesn't so much sing on the album as she talks over the music. I notice there's a lot less guitars on this album and a lot, a lot more piano/keyboard bits. There's even one bit that reminds me of the sounds at the beginning of The Unicorns' "I Don't Wanna Die."

Anyway I am sure that there will be another giant fight over the Furnaces: are they geniuses or just plain awful? After this one we may hear more of the latter.

Tracy Greenwood

Alright alright I may have already posted about them but they are waaay worth another post.

Tracy + the Plastics is, contrary to the name, only one person not even named Tracy. Wynne Greenwood plays the parts of Tracy and the Plastics, Nikki and Cola. See, Tracy + the Plastics are one of those bands, you know, the artsy ones. Well at shows Greenwood performs on stage in front of a screen on which is projected her edited video of Nikki and Cola (who are, again, Greenwood) as her back-up band. I may have made it sound confusing but it really isn't.

I'm posting about them because now that I live in Utah I will have to rely on Salt Lake City as my salvation for shows. There are only a few venues from what I've seen that nationwide artists come through. One of them, Kilby Court, says Tracy + the Plastics are playing there on September 16th. I haven't been able to find any information to verify that but if you happen to be in the area I recommend you scope it out as a possible show.

Yeah I know. White kids talkin about rapping. It's different though when the rapper's white too, right? I mean, people can obsess over Eminem so why can't I rave about a white Canadian rapper? Yeah don't worry I will.

Anyway I can't remember if I ever talked about Richard Terfry but I think he's amazing. His rap moniker is Buck 65 and he is indeed from Canada. I saw him at SXSW this last year opening for Saul Williams. It's just him and his turn table, a portable CD player and glitter in his pockets. He would use the glitter for an awing effect. It was great. His lyrics are amazing and uuhh yeah. Haha anyway he just had a CD come out at the end of June called Secret House Against the World. I haven't gotten it yet but I've found some mp3s from it and I like what I hear.

New Decemberists Tracks

Okay so this is a bit of thieving from the Decemberists Message Board but hey, I know some of you don't go there but you should. They always got nice stuff.

Anyway, at his latest dates, Colin Meloy has unveiled a few new tracks that might be next-album fodder or just songs. Anyway they're both really good, one's even about the infamous Shankill Butchers in Ireleand. Spooky stuff, a bit like their "A Cautionary Tale" except more gruesome.

Okay so you may or may not have heard about a band called The Actual Tigers. I heard of them from somewhere or another bought their only CD Gravelled & Green back in 2001 and liked it lots. Well that band split up and its songwriter, Tim Seely, has just recently released his solo CD Funeral Music. It's been getting play on KEXP and I can't wait to get a copy.

New Wooden Wand

I was supplied with the new Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice CD Buck Dharma the other day. It's a bit hard to listen to. It's a lot of spacy noise and there's nothing straightforward about it. That's a good thing, but I can see putting it on as background noise if I was abstract painting or something. It's a bit strange. And you know I can't find a tracklisting anywhere for it. I did find the cover art though and that's something.

The new Voxtrot 7" for the song "Raised By Wolves" has been added to the shop at Magic Marker Records. This here picture on the left is the cover art (so very Texan) and they information says that it's backed with the song "They Never Mean What They Say."

I don't think you can exactly order it just yet because it says the album isn't on file but soon!

Anyway I just thought there might be some fans like me anxious for this release.

Yeah so everyone might just remember the Magic Numbers in a few years for being that band that walked off Top of the Pops because someone said they were fat. Even though I don't think that's what realent down. They're probably just really really sensitive and we all ought to be cautious of using certain discriminating adjectives 'round them.

Anyway it's a shame they got this publicity because that's the first time I decided to look into them. Yeah I know their album is Mercury nominated. That should've been enough to get me to even think about wanting to hear their music. Nope it's because they're quasi-divas. Okay that's mean. I forgive them for being sensitive because their music is quite decent.

Jeff Hanson

Some people find Jeff Hanson's voice disarming, alarming, putting-off, and generally girly. I know you've heard him by now, he seems to be the curious sideshow in the always happening indie world.

Well, Jeff Hanson does sing like a girl and I find it endearing. His second self-titled album was released earlier in the year on, you guessed it, Kill Rock Stars Records. His first album, Son was released a year or two ago. They're both very simple voice-and-guitar CDs but very melody driven. His voice takes the center stage of all songs due to it's uniqueness. He uses it to its greatest advantage and comes off as a talented songwriter a stone's throw away from the rest of that crowd.

Minus The Bear

So a lot of people have already heard of Minus the Bear. I hadn't until I found out that they're going to be touring around with Thunderbirds Are Now! this fall. That caught my eye. And the fact that they have a new album Menos El Oso coming out soon. Sounds like the perfect time to dig into them, right? Yeah okay they have funny song titles and stuff which is always amusing but it's just plain good music and I like that. Here you go, including a couple from the new album.

Shins Live!

Alright the Shins are continually picking dates to play in Texas when I'm elsewhere or otherwise occupied. It's a good thing for bootlegs then. For me and for you!

This directory has two full Shins performances (in Cambridge and at Stubb's in Austin) and a solo set by James Mercer at the Moonshine Festival last October.

Just what are those Shins up to? Well according to their website, they've been becoming fathers of children and dogs, spending time with loved ones, and moving into new houses. They also say that James Mercer is working on some new tunes and they will be "spending the majority of the rest of the summer, and part of the fall putting all of the songs together...making sure the record lives up to everyones expectations." Aww that's kind of them.

They've also just shot two videos for the song "Saint Simon": one will be a more traditional music video and the other is a performance for the next installment of the Burn to Shine series, "an ongoing series of films shot of different bands from a particular region showing up to perform one song live without overdubs or corrections, in a house that is about to be demolished." Sounds nifty. This edition will also feature performances from The Thermals and The Decmberists.

They're also opening for the White Stripes at some dates, and they're going to be part of that Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas.

Soo thanks to Fluxblog we all have an aural gander of the Fiery Furnaces take on the Beatles' track "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". Some people aren't too satisfied with it (check Fluxblog's comments), but I think it's alright. Mind I'll be a fan of mostly everything those Friedbergers will do. The things we go through for love.

So, we all know thanks to Pitchfork that the Friedbergers have a new album coming out this fall called Rehearsing My Choir. Yeah this is the one with their grandma. And yes I, like you, am interested to see whether they bring their grandmother on tour with them. I've seen the FF's twice and I think that both times their parents were at the shows. So obviously they already have family on tour so what's another family member, this time on stage?

Also, MTV says they've just finished their other album Bitter Tea and it should be coming out early next year. They describe it as "a nice record with bright, love songs... a newfangled version of the synthesizer-heavy music from the Who's 1975 'Tommy' film, and an 'old-time '20s version of Devo' with mandolin orchestras." Yeah okay.

Oh I also hear that their drummer, Andy Knowles, is going to be drumming for Franz Ferdinand this fall because Franz's drummer Paul Thompson is picking up the guitar this time around leaving the drumkit vacant. Oh and wait you already heard The Franz have a song on their record called "Eleanor Put Your Boots Back On" and yeah it's about Eleanor Friedberger. As far as we know.

So today I was going to do a little itty bitty post on local artists but I can't find any mp3's for any of the two good bands I've heard from around here.

I live in Tyler, TX and it's pretty much a cultural wasteland. There are several bands that play around here and gather a fanbase but most of them suck pretty hard. A lot of the bands describe themselves as "(blank)-core" from hardcore to grindcore to dancecore to cuddlecore (seriously it's that bad). But in the past month or so I've discovered a few good local bands that have a lot of potential to be something better. If they do get big, I think they'll both have to change their names.
The horribly uncomfortable thing about this is I know people in both of these bands so it feels like I'm whoring them, which I guess I am to some but I don't mean to.

Knifight is this one guy named John. He's really nice and has the Sam Beam Beard but doesn't sport Beam's style. Instead he takes on a drastically different persona. Hidden behind a laptop he creates a lot of weird beats and sounds. He once even played with my chemistry teacher. Anyway, one of his favorite things to do is to loop audio from movies and sort of distort it into something completely different. Visit his Myspace to hear some songs. I don't think he has a CD or anything but I see a lot of people around town wearing Knifight shirts.

This next band is a bit ridiculous. The Artful Dodger has been around for about a month and a half and have only played a few shows. My friend plays the cello for them. Yeah they have 12 people in the band. A lot of people have been ofling their success and everything, but I think they may just be a bit blinded by the fact that they can fit twelve people with their instruments on one stage and still sound good. And I don't think a lot of people have heard that kind of thing around here. I saw them play last weekend for a Muscular Dystrophy benefit. Everyone told me they sounded like Bright Eyes, but I found that sort of unfounded. I think it's the 12 people thing speaking to them. The singer's voice reminded me a lot of Damien Rice, ecept maybe a little more constrained and it isn't raised as much. The music actually Visit their MySpace to...look at pictures? They had a CD at the show but they only made 50 and they had to make a waiting list blah blah I hear the quality wasn't too good. They actually did a Knifight cover at the show. Cuddly huh? EDIT: They actually put up some mp3's on their MySpace so go listen to them. They sound pretty good.

Okay uhh this post is sorta crap because there's little to listen to and you'll probably never see these bands live unless you move here and I don't really recommend that.

I promise there'll be a better post later.

States' Rights

You know, the Pacific Northwest sure does have a lot of good record labels going on. Another one I've recently stumbled upon is the historically-minded States Rights Records.

I don't remember exactly how I found them but I'm glad I did. I'm soon going to buy their new compilation "Bro Zone" if not mainly for the cool factor of getting a packet of Kool-Aid with a CD. Here's what they have to say:

Anyway, I guess it was through the Dirty Projectors that I found out about this awesome label. Also, I'd heard of Bobby Birdman before because of his work with Hush Records. He's one of the biggest people they have on there it seems. I also was surprised to see The Watery Graves on there. I'd seen and heard them once before from a warehouse show they played with Colin Meloy in 2001 or so.

Flowers Gets Hitched

Yeah okay I'm probably the last to say this but Contact Music says that The Killers' lead singer Brandon Flowers got married over the weekend to his long-time girlfriend.

"The 'Smile Like You Mean It' star wanted minimum attention while marrying his beloved Tana Munblowsky, a retail manager of trendy clothing store Urban Outfitters in Flowers' home town of Las Vegas, Nevada.

And the star even snubbed cheeky Sir Elton John who was desperate to attend the nuptials, refusing to give him an invitation when he met the rocker earlier this year."

Also, according to Island Records, they'll be re-releasing Hot Fuss with the additional bonus tracks

"On August 16th, the Killers will release a special album titled, HOT FUSS LIMITED EDITION, which will include 3 bonus tracks ("Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll", "The Ballad of Michael Valentine" and "Under The Gun") and special artwork never released before in the United States! The album will be available in stores and digitally on iTunes on 8/16."

A clever name is always a start. A historically-centered clever? Extra super bonus points. John Wilkes Booze are made, huh? That and they're KRS flunkies.

Formerly the John Wilkes Booze Explosion, John Wilkes Booze is a six-piece soul band from Bloomington, Indiana. The band features/has featured the talents of some ex-members of the Impossible Shapes, Unstable Ensemble, The Devil is Electric, and Songs: Ohia. Their first album for KRS, The Five Pillars of Soul was a collection of five prior EPs dedicated to five figures whom the band believed contributed much to the genre of soul.

Their new album Telescopic Eyes Glance the Future Sick is going to be released this fall on Kill Rock Stars.

Welcome to the Midwest has very nicely put up Sufjan Stevens' entire show at the Bluebird in Denver from Saturday. He was also very generous to rip Sufjan's song from the upcoming Rubber Soul tribute.

Gram Rabbit/Electrelane/Le Tigre @ Emo's, July 28

My sister was lucky enough to go see Le Tigre in Austin last week and she obliged to write out a review for me. For the most part it made me jealous but maybe it'll inspire some of you to go see them.

"Gram Rabbit's emblem with the bunny in the pentagram did nothing for me, but the crowd loved the bad 90's dance beats, numerous face masks/costumes, and the porn-starrish act? put on by the lead singer.

Emo's was hot, but anyone who's ever been there knows that. We were on the right of the stage, near a fan that was pointed to the middle, but I turned it to point towards us and the girls around us appreciated it.

Electrelane seemed happy at first until they realized just how hot it was under that roof. The singer even smiled a couple of times, which T don't believe I've seen in the 3 other times I've seen them. at the beginning there was this "sexy, sexy, sexy" wave sweeping thru the crowd after the first couple of songs...a couple of girls even sexually harrassed the bassist when she bent over. Don't know why women think it's acceptable for them to do. They passed out water to the crowd at the end of the set, which was very welcome. In between sets, there were a couple of girls that I had to help stumble over to the fan behind me, cause they were going to faint. I picked up half empty water bottles off the stage and ground to keep them hydrated. even when Le Tigre came on, they stayed over there.

The crowd was pushy, but not overly so...someone had brought confetti, which was thrown all over as soon as le tigre took the stage. One of the confetti makers asked Johanna to throw it and she matter-of-factly said no. It was in my hair, stuck to my face and every other patch of exposed skin that had previously been dripping with sweat. I think we left a ton in the rental car. Still, those girls were on...some technical difficulties in set-up, but no hitches in the set, except JD and Johanna laughing and forgetting a step or 2. Those girls really know how to put on a show. They're no spring chickens, you know...but being on stage and giving it all seems to keep them young. Everyone danced and sang along...it was awesome."

Franz Renames Album

NME states that Franz Ferdinand has had second thoughts on simply calling their second album Franz Ferdinand.

The band had originally planned to not name any of their albums, and throughout the recording process had said the album would be simply titled Franz Ferdinand.

However, the album is now called You Could Have It So Much Better…With Franz Ferdinand and is released on October 3.

A single, "Do You Want To", precedes the record on September 19.
