Super Limited Thurston Moore Cassette

Do you love Sonic Youth? How about drones? I thought some of you, probably a very small sum, would enjoy this.

Thurston Moore - Black Weeds / White Death C40 Cassette (Meudiademorte)
“New solo album from Thurston that dovetails beautifully with the feathers of feedback drone that dominated Flipped-Out Bride. This one starts with the same kind of phantom electricity before dovetailing into railroads of gloriously overloaded guitar, all cut into chunks of singing fuzz. Some absolutely wild playing here that touches on Haino’s form circa The Book Of Eternity Set Aflame. Limited to only 200 copies and housed in a full-colour 8×6 inch art pack. Recommended.”
Volcanic Tongue
DL it here. (change the xx to tt)

In September, Thurston will release Trees Outside the Academy. Get some tracks here from my previous post about it.

Worked Up in A Fine Frenzy

No better way to start a weekend then with a must-have-cd. A Fine Frenzy has been on my radar for a while now. I first heard Alison Sudohl's arresting voice on KCRW. Immediately, I had to know who was singing.

As an only child of divorced parents Alison Sudohl found solace in her piano. Graduating from high school at only 16, she joined a band, but left it at 18 for evenings of songwriting in her living room.

A Fine Frenzy's One Cell in the Sea is haunting and beautiful, but moreover it is raw and heart rending. With a dark under current and a fantastic voice, A Fine Frenzy looks inside the lovelorn and brings us hope.

It was just released Tuesday and why buy the physical cd, you ask? Being super smart like those Saddle Creek kids who add a free digital download when you buy a cd, One Cell in the Sea offers a 5 song demo and a video download.

A Fine Frenzy is on tour with Rufus Wainwright right now, then will join Brandi Carlile in September. Complete list of tour dates here.

Gozoso Zine Issue#1

Mike sent me this zine. Even as a kid he was always making zines, tapes, artwork, books of haikus, and such. I think he's totally funny, but I am pretty biased.

Mike's Birthday with Kanye

Today is Michael's Birthday. Michael is the architect & father of this here little site. He is 20 yrs old today and hopefully doing it up right in Mexico. So, today it is all about him.

Mike loves him some Kanye West. Check out Kanye's video for "Can't Tell Me Nothin" starring Zach Galifianakis.

p.s. Kitties are not too fond of hats

The last post today on Pitchfork was no surprise to any Sleater-Kinney fan. Fred Armisen has long been making his own funny videos, including my obvious favorite above.

He used to have many others under his youtube moniker inhighcontrast, but he must have taken them down.

Anybody know how to capture/save a youtube video? I'd hate for the Carrie one to go away forever too.

Too Pure Singles Club

One of my all-time favorite record labels Too Pure has announced a new singles club. Every month they'll be putting out a limited edition 7" of one of their new and/or favorite artists.

Boasting a roster of releases by PJ Harvey, Stereolab, Electrelane, The Organ, Mouse on Mars, Scout Niblett, Tracy & the Plastics, The Rogers Sisters, Young People, and so many more, Too Pure has already lined up their first few months of 7"s for the club.

October brings you Lone Lady. Comparisons to Kim Gordon and PJ Harvey are relevant and reveal her tendency for heavy guitar and a powerful voice. She has 3 mp3s available for download on her myspace.

November's 7" is Vera November (aka Verity Susman of Electrelane). I'm curious to hear Verity's work sans Electrelane. How much of that sound is hers or influenced by her? You can listen to 4 songs on myspace.

With major faith in their impecable taste, I subscribed last night. The subscription is nearly $75 american, but still less than buying 12 imports in the store, if you can find them.

Subscribe to the Too Pure Singles Club here (and find out about the launch party in London Sept 13th).

Liars opening for Interpol!!

Just wanted to share the good news...Liars are opening for Interpol!!!

So, for those of you that think the last Interpol tour was a little lack luster, I'm hoping that the Liars are going to raise the game, 'cause they put on a KILLER show.

Here are some more of my pics from their show at the Gypsy Tea Room May 27, 2006.

New Fiery Furnaces song

Another band with ties to Texas, The Fiery Furnaces have finished a new album Widow City, in reference to to their hometown Chicago. It won't be released until October, but it's been leaked already.

At least 6 of the 16 songs have already been posted elsewhere, so I will only add one more log to that fire.

Fan site TheFieryFurnaces.net has a lot of cool hard to find FF items including these:

Oh, what's the link to Texas you ask? Eleanor went to the University of Texas.

New Belaire-Exploding Impacting

Let's keep this Texas ball Rolling. I was super excited to get the new Belaire in the mail. You know Belaire, twins Cari and Christa and Jason and Matt of Voxtrot.

I wish I could have made it to their cd release party last weekend. Alas, Austin is not as close as I want it to be.

The new album Exploding Impacting is great, a little more polished than their first, but that happens as bands progress. While listening to this record, imagine dancing around the kitchen, making dinner in anticipation of a great date night.

A Great Week for (Texas) Music

So much going on this week with musicians from Texas. I'm sure you guys have already picked up the new Spoon and the well-deservedly hyped St. Vincent. You know, I've always said, "If they're from Texas or Canada, they're probably good and/or definitely worth a listen."

These guys are no different. Mike & I first saw and loved Fishboy when they opened for the Decemberists at Rubber Gloves in '03. He(Eric) got this Fishboy moniker after swallowing a fish out of a tank at the Dallas Aquarium on a 7th grade field trip.

Fishboy is set to release a rock opera on Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. In Eric/Fishboy's own words:
It's a rock opera about how myself, the band and the ghost of Buddy Holly attempt to save Texas by going on a tour/crime spree in order to perform all 8030 of the songs I've written in my sleep since I was in the womb. It's appropriately titled: "Albatross: How We Failed To Save The Lone Star State With The Power Of Rock And Roll"
They've opened for and are R.I.Y.L. Of Montreal, Architecture in Helsinki, Spoon, or The Decemberists.

You guys in the DFW area can see their dynamic show tonight at Rubber Gloves.

Dec's Not-So-Secret Show

I don't feel bad announcing a "Secret" show that was announced on Myspace, since everybody and their dog's on that thing. So, this Wednesday The Decemberists are playing a very small , possibly acoustic, show at the Mohawk in Austin. I believe they're going to be in Austin to tape an episode of Austin City Limits. It's going to be first come, first served. Anyone want to save me a spot since I'll be driving down from Dallas?...ha

The Decemberists - The Perfect Crime #2 (Live from Soho iTunes Exclusive)

Zeppelin Thieves?

No doubt that Led Zeppelin are great musicians, but you should hear the evidence in a case of them "borrowing" songs from other artists and giving the originals no credit (until they were sued).

Dazed and Confused done originally by Jake Holmes

Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin

8 of 9 songs on their first album Led Zeppelin have now been credited to someone else. I know this isn't new news, but it is still amazing when you hear the similarities.

See the whole case here.
